How this works and sources
What is counted. We downloaded NOAA’s Storm Events detail files for 2016 through 2026 and kept every Hail and Tornado report filed for Benton County and Washington County, Arkansas. A hail report counts for your town if its starting point is within 5 miles of your town’s center point. A tornado counts if the straight line from the start to the end of its logged path comes within 5 miles. Tornadoes that crossed a county line are logged as one segment per county.
Town centers. U.S. Census Bureau 2024 Gazetteer internal points for each city.
“Last notable event” is the most recent hail report of 1.00 inch or more, or the most recent tornado path, within 5 miles, including 2026.
Limits. These are reports, not a complete record of every stone that fell. Busy roads and towns get more reports than open country, one storm can produce several reports, and storms just across the Oklahoma, Missouri or Madison County lines are not included. The 2026 file was updated September 18, 2026 and runs through June 2026.
Hail sizes follow the National Weather Service hail size chart (penny 0.75 in, quarter 1.00 in, half dollar 1.25 in, golf ball 1.75 in, tennis ball 2.50 in, baseball 2.75 in, grapefruit 4.00 in).

Ten years of storms
The storms that shaped Northwest Arkansas rooflines
Most years bring a handful of hail days and a scare or two. A few nights stand out, and they are worth knowing if you own a home here.
The biggest night in the record is May 26, 2024, when seven tornado segments touched down in Benton County. One came across from Oklahoma near Cherokee City and tracked toward Decatur as an EF3, with estimated winds of 145 to 155 mph. NOAA logs its width at 3,200 yards, and the Encyclopedia of Arkansas calls that a new state record, beating a 2,900 yard tornado from April 2014.
Within the hour another tornado formed along SE Walton Boulevard near the Bentonville Municipal Airport, crossed I-49, and widened to more than a mile and a half as it crossed Dixieland Road and Highway 94 toward Rogers. NOAA says nearly 600 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by that EF2, and it carries an $80 million property damage estimate. A federal disaster declaration for Benton County followed on May 31, 2024.
Hail has its own headline. On the morning of May 4, 2020, a resident on Buckingham Drive near Johnson measured hailstones five inches across. That day produced 15 hail reports across the two counties, and seven of them were golf ball size or larger.
The nights that matter most
| Date | What hit | Where | What NOAA logged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 20, 2019 | EF2 tornado | Siloam Springs east toward Avoca | A 31.4 mile path, up to 2,640 yards wide, $6 million in property damage |
| May 4, 2020 | Giant hail | Johnson, Rogers, east Fayetteville | 5.00 in near Johnson, 4.00 in northeast of Johnson, 3.00 in at Rogers |
| Mar 30, 2022 | EF3 tornado | Johnson to the Springdale Municipal Airport | Winds of 135 to 145 mph, 7 injured, at least 135 homes and 40 businesses damaged or destroyed |
| May 26, 2024 | EF3 and EF2 tornadoes | Decatur, Centerton, Bentonville to Rogers | A record 3,200 yard width near Decatur and $80 million at the Bentonville segment |
| Apr 28, 2026 | Widespread large hail | Cave Springs, Elm Springs, Lowell, Farmington | 3.00 in in Cave Springs, 4.00 in south of town, 13 reports golf ball size or bigger |
What these numbers do and do not tell you
Every count on this page is a report from a spotter, a resident, an officer or a National Weather Service survey crew. Towns and highways get more reports than open country, so a quiet number does not always mean a quiet sky. What the reports do show is that big hail is not rare here. It lands somewhere in these two counties most springs.

What hail and wind actually do to a gutter system
Gutters sit right at the edge of the roof, where hail hits hardest and wind pulls hardest. Here is what our crews look for after a storm.
Hail damage on gutters is easy to miss from the yard. A dented gutter still looks like a gutter. What changes is how it works. Dents along the bottom can leave low spots that hold water, a crushed downspout elbow chokes the flow, and a seam that took a direct hit can start to drip at the corner. None of that shows up until the next heavy rain.
Wind does its damage differently. It pulls on the whole run, works hangers loose, and drops limbs and leaves into the trough, so we look for runs pulling away from the fascia and outlets packed with green leaves.
When we come out after a storm, we photograph and document everything we find, so if you decide to file a claim your insurance file is ready. Whether to file, and what is covered, is between you and your insurer.
What our crew checks on a post-storm visit
- The face, bottom and back of every run for hail dents and creases.
- Downspouts and elbows for crushed, split or kinked sections.
- Corner seams and end caps for fresh leaks.
- Hangers and the fascia board behind the gutter, for looseness or rot.
- Gutter guards for bent, lifted or torn panels.
- Outlets and downspouts flushed with water, so we know they still drain.
- Shingle granules in the trough, a sign the roof edge took hail too.
- Extensions and splash areas, so water still lands away from the house.
Repair or replace?
Not every dent means new gutters. A few dents with solid seams and good drainage can often be left alone or repaired. When a run has split seams, crushed outlets and loose hangers along most of its length, our crew forms a new seamless gutter on-site, cut to the exact length of your roofline. If the storm also tore up your guards, it is a good time to look at BroGuard fine metal mesh. For smaller fixes, see our gutter repair page.

March through May is when Northwest Arkansas gets hit
Hail can fall in any month here, but the record leans hard toward spring. That is when your gutters need to be ready.
Of the 261 hail reports logged in Benton and Washington counties from 2016 to 2025, 171 came in March, April or May. May alone accounts for 76. Those same three months hold 41 of the 71 hail days. Summer storms still bring hail, and July 20, 2018 dropped stones 2.75 inches across near Elkins, but spring is the main event.
Spring is also when the heavy rain comes, so a gutter that took a hit in April gets tested again within days. Check right after a hail day, not in the fall.
A simple storm-season routine
- Before March.Get the gutters cleaned and the hangers tightened so spring storms hit a system that drains. Our gutter cleaning crews flush every downspout.
- After each hail day.Look up your town in the Storm Check, write down the date, and do the ten minute walk from the ground.
- Within a few weeks.Book a free check so damage is found and photographed while the storm date is fresh.
Rather not keep track? Our gutter maintenance program puts your home on a schedule timed to spring storms and fall leaf drop. See our season-by-season guide for the full year.

How storm history differs across Northwest Arkansas
Storms do not hit every town the same way. A few patterns stand out in the reports.
Ten years, five miles around each town
| Town | Hail reports | Biggest hail | Tornado paths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johnson | 66 on 33 days | 5.00 in, May 4, 2020 | 2 |
| Fayetteville | 44 on 24 days | 5.00 in, May 4, 2020 | 2 |
| Rogers | 43 on 16 days | 3.00 in, May 4, 2020 | 4 |
| Springdale | 42 on 22 days | 4.00 in, May 4, 2020 | 1 |
| Bentonville | 40 on 15 days | 2.50 in, May 26, 2024 | 7 |
| Centerton | 25 on 13 days | 2.00 in, May 4, 2020 | 7 |
| Decatur | 12 on 10 days | 2.75 in, Mar 14, 2024 | 3 |
| Cave Springs | 15 on 11 days | 1.25 in, Apr 29, 2017 | 3 |
What stands out
- The I-49 corridor from Fayetteville through Johnson and Springdale logs the most hail, partly because more people are there to report it.
- Bentonville and Centerton each had seven tornado paths pass within five miles, more than any other town we checked.
- Cave Springs had a quiet ten years, then 3.00 inch hail in town and 4.00 inch hail about three miles south on April 28, 2026.
- Five-mile circles overlap, so one storm can show up under two or three neighboring towns.
Whatever your number, the job after a storm is the same. We cover every one of these towns, along with Bella Vista, Lowell, Siloam Springs, Pea Ridge, Farmington, Prairie Grove and the rest of our Northwest Arkansas service area. If heavy rain is your bigger worry, try our Ozark downpour replay.

Yes. The EF3 that hit near Decatur on May 26, 2024 was logged at 3,200 yards wide. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas reports that set a new state record for width, beating a 2,900 yard tornado from April 2014. NOAA estimates its peak winds at 145 to 155 mph in Benton County.
It can. Gutters and downspouts are thinner and more exposed than shingles, so they often dent first. Dents along the bottom of a run, crushed downspout elbows and split corner seams may not show from the yard but change how the system drains. A free post-storm check finds them.
Yes. After a storm, our crew photographs and documents the damage we find so your insurance file is ready. Whether to file a claim and what it covers is up to you and your insurance company. Write down the storm date from the Storm Check so it is on record.
The Storm Check counts hail reports that started within five miles of your town’s center and tornado paths that passed within five miles. Reports only cover what was logged in Benton and Washington counties, so storms just over the Oklahoma, Missouri or Madison County line are not included.
Call (479) 370-5248 and we will get you on the schedule. Storm checks are free, and our crews are based in Springdale, so we cover Benton and Washington counties without a long drive. The sooner damage is found and photographed, the easier it is to tie to a storm date.
