Rain gutters for Northwest Arkansas homes
How we spec a gutter system for your roof, run by run
Two houses on the same Bentonville street can need different gutters. Here is what we measure, the rules of thumb we use, and where to go deeper on each choice.
A gutter system is a set of decisions that depend on each other. The size depends on how much roof drains into each run. The downspout size depends on the gutter. The profile depends on the house, and the material depends on how long you plan to stay and what you want it to look like. Get the first decision wrong and the rest can’t save it: a beautiful copper gutter that is too small still overflows in an April downpour.
Everything we hang is formed on-site from a coil on our truck, so each run is one piece cut to your roofline. That also means the spec can change run by run without special ordering: a bigger gutter over the back porch, a copper accent at the entry, a guard only on the side under the oaks.
What we measure before recommending anything
- The roof area and pitch feeding each run. Steep roofs push water faster and harder into the trough.
- The length of each run, since long runs need more downspouts or more capacity.
- Upper roofs that empty onto lower roofs, concentrating water on one short section.
- Valleys, where two roof planes pour into a single corner.
- The trees overhead, because debris load decides whether a guard belongs in the plan.
- Where each downspout can discharge without washing out a slope or flooding a walkway.
Rules of thumb we use on Northwest Arkansas roofs
| Situation | What usually works | Downspout |
|---|---|---|
| Runs under 40 feet, no upper roof draining in, no overflow in normal rain | 5 inch gutter with at least one downspout | 2 by 3 inch |
| Runs over 40 feet | 5 inch with two downspouts, or 6 inch if a second downspout won’t fit | 2 by 3 or 3 by 4 inch |
| Runs over 60 feet, or upper roofs draining onto a lower gutter | 6 inch | 3 by 4 inch |
| Large roof areas concentrating on one spot, or commercial roofs | 7 inch or larger | Sized to the flow |
A 6 inch gutter is only an inch wider than a 5 inch, but it carries roughly 40 percent more water. Mixing sizes on one house is often the smartest money: 6 inch where the roof concentrates, 5 inch everywhere else. Our page on gutter sizes goes into each one.

New construction around Bentonville, Centerton and Cave Springs
Northwest Arkansas is growing fast, and a lot of new homes go up with the minimum: 5 inch gutters everywhere, too few downspouts, and outlets that empty right at the foundation. On a new roof with a steep pitch and a lot dug out of a hillside, that minimum often shows its limits in the first spring storm season. We walk through what to look for in what builder-grade gutters miss, and if you are budgeting a replacement, our gutter installation cost guide breaks down the factors.

You choose a size, a profile and a material. Sizes are 5, 6 and 7 inch, profiles are K-style and half-round, and materials are aluminum in a range of baked-on colors, copper, galvanized steel and galvalume. Everything is formed seamless on-site, and metal mesh guards can go on at install or be added later to the same system.
Because roof water has to go somewhere, and without gutters it lands in the soil at your foundation, on the siding and in the beds below. With heavy spring downpours and the steep, wooded lots common here, unmanaged runoff causes erosion, basement flooding and foundation cracks. Gutters catch it and send it through downspouts away from the house.
Start with size, because capacity decides whether the system keeps up with a Northwest Arkansas storm. Then pick the profile, K-style for most homes or half-round for a traditional look, then the material and color. Last, decide on guards. A Solutionist measures your roof and walks through each choice at a free estimate.
Yes, as upgrades. Options include rain chains, ornamental conductor heads, embossed gutters, rain barrels and custom rain barrels. A rain chain gives a decorative path for water where a plain downspout would go, and a rain barrel holds roof water for the garden. Ask about them at your estimate, especially if you are going with copper.
Vinyl and plastic gutters go up in sections, because they cannot be roll-formed into a seamless run, and they are less sturdy. Our seamless gutters are metal: aluminum, copper, galvanized steel and galvalume, with metal mesh guards and nothing plastic on your roofline. Under an oak and hickory canopy, with winter ice and spring hail, fewer seams and a stronger material hold up better.
The length of your roofline, the gutter size, the material and profile, the number of downspouts, and whether you add guards all move the price. Copper and half-round cost more than aluminum K-style, and fascia repairs add to it. A Solutionist measures everything and gives you a free written estimate, so you see the number before any work starts.
