Gutter sizing in Northwest Arkansas
Picking the right gutter size, one roof face at a time
Size is not one decision for the whole house. It is a run-by-run call based on how much roof drains into each gutter and how hard it rains when spring storms roll through.
Northwest Arkansas gets 45-plus inches of rain a year, and a lot of it shows up in heavy spring bursts. A gutter only has to fail for twenty minutes in an April storm to send water over the front edge, down the siding and into the soil at your foundation. Sizing is how we keep that from happening.
We measure each roof face on its own. A short run over the front porch and a long back eave catching a steep upper roof are two different jobs, and they often get two different answers. Mixing sizes on one house is normal and usually the most cost-effective way to add capacity exactly where it is needed.
Downspouts are half the equation. A properly sized gutter with one undersized outlet still overflows, so every size recommendation comes with a downspout count and size to match.
Which size fits which part of your house
| Size | Usually right for | Downspouts | Learn more |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inch | Most single-family roof faces, runs under 40 feet, no upper roof draining in | 2×3, or 3×4 on larger roof areas | 5 inch gutters |
| 6 inch | Long runs, steep pitches, inside valleys, lower gutters catching an upper roof | 3×4 | 6 inch gutters |
| 7 inch | Commercial buildings, barns and very large roof areas where 6 inch still overflows | Oversized to match | 7 inch gutters |
| Larger | Unusual industrial or commercial roofs | Sized to the roof | Ask your Solutionist |
What your Solutionist measures before recommending a size
- The square footage of roof that drains into each individual run.
- Roof pitch, since steeper roofs push water off faster and harder.
- Inside valleys, where two slopes funnel water to one corner.
- Upper roofs that empty onto a lower roof and its gutter.
- Run length and where downspouts can actually go on the wall.
- Where the water lands at grade, which on a sloped, wooded lot can matter as much as the gutter itself.
Signs your current gutters are the wrong size
- Overflow at one corner.Usually a valley or upper roof sending more water than that run or its outlet can carry.
- Overflow while the gutter is clean. If debris is not the cause, capacity is. Cleaning more often will not fix it.
- Streaks and splash damage.Lines on the siding or washed-out mulch below one stretch of eave point to the same section every storm.

Posted on GoogleGutter Sizes Questions, Answered
We size by roof area, pitch, roofline and how much rain the gutters have to carry. 5 inch works for many homes with runs under 40 feet and enough downspouts. 6 inch handles runs over 60 feet, valleys and upper roofs draining onto lower ones. 7 inch is for commercial buildings and very large roofs. Heavy downpours are why so many homes are moving up to 6 inch.
Yes. A 6 inch gutter is only one inch wider, but it handles about 40 percent more water. That extra capacity is what keeps a long run or a valley from overflowing in a hard spring storm. It pairs with larger 3 by 4 inch downspouts, since the downspout has to keep up with the gutter.
Yes, and on a lot of homes here it is the smart setup. A big back roof plane or a valley can overflow in a spring downpour while the short runs over the garage never do. So the heavy spots, including lower roofs that catch water from upper ones, get 6 inch, and the rest stays 5 inch. It saves money, and the matching profiles still read as one system.
Sometimes. We form 5, 6 and 7 inch seamless gutters here, and some buildings need even more capacity. Larger sizes such as 8 inch are offered at some locations, so contact your local Solutionist and we will tell you what we can do for your roof.
Yes. Every size comes in our full color range, and we can often match colors outside our regular swatches. That means a 6 inch gutter on the back of the house can match the 5 inch runs on the front, and downspouts can be matched to your siding if you want them to disappear.
Usually because too much water is concentrated in one spot for the gutter size. Inside valleys send fast-moving water to a small section of gutter, and long runs with one downspout back up at the ends. The fix can be a 6 inch gutter, an added downspout or both. We look at where your roof concentrates water during a free estimate.
