5 inch gutters in Northwest Arkansas
When 5 inch is enough, and how we make it keep up
A 5 inch gutter handles most roof faces in Northwest Arkansas just fine. When one overflows, the size is often not the problem. The outlets, the pitch or the hangers usually are.
When a 5 inch gutter overflows, the trough itself often could have carried the water. What failed was a single downspout on a long run, a run hung dead level so water sat in the middle, or an outlet too small for the roof area feeding it. Those are the shortcuts we find most on newer homes around Bentonville, Centerton, Cave Springs and Rogers, where whole streets went up quickly.
So before anyone tells you that you need bigger gutters, we look at how the 5 inch system was built. Adding a downspout, re-pitching a run or stepping up from a 2×3 to a 3×4 downspout often solves an overflow for far less than replacing the whole system.
When we do install new 5 inch gutters, they are formed seamless on-site, so a 38 foot eave gets one 38 foot piece with no joints along the way to drip in a storm.
5 inch is the right call when
- The run is under 40 feet with one downspout, or longer with two or more.
- It does not overflow in an ordinary rain.
- The roof is asphalt shingle with a proper drip edge behind the gutter.
- No upper roof empties onto the roof above it.
- There is no inside valley dumping into the middle of the run.
- The roof pitch is moderate rather than steep.
Where 5 inch works on a typical house, and where it does not
| Part of the house | 5 inch? | What we would do |
|---|---|---|
| Single-story front eave | Usually yes | 5 inch with a downspout at each end if the run passes 40 feet |
| Garage eave | Usually yes | 5 inch, with the downspout placed away from the driveway walk path |
| Porch roof below a second story | No | Step that run up to 6 inch gutters to take the upper roof’s water |
| Corner under an inside valley | Sometimes | Add an outlet at the corner, or upsize just that run |
| Long back eave on a steep roof | Rarely | 6 inch with 3×4 downspouts |
How we build a 5 inch system to last
- Hidden hangers, screwed in.Screw-type hidden hangers hold through freeze-thaw cycles that work old spikes loose.
- Real pitch toward outlets. Each run slopes to its downspout so water does not sit and freeze or breed mosquitoes.
- Outlets sized to the roof.Larger roof areas get a 3×4 downspout even on a 5 inch gutter.
Under oak and hickory, a 5 inch trough fills with leaves faster than a wider one, so plan on fall gutter cleaning or add BroGuard micro-mesh at install. Not sure which size your house needs overall? For many homes, yes. Consider 5 inch when a run is under 40 feet with one downspout or over 40 feet with two or more, the gutter does not overflow in average rain, and the roof is asphalt shingle with proper drip edge. If an upper roof with gutters drains onto that section, it needs a bigger gutter.
Skip 5 inch where upper roofs with gutters drain onto a lower roof, on long runs that cannot get a second downspout, and in valleys where water comes off fast and overflows in heavy rain. Metal roofs shed water fast enough that 6 inch is usually the better call. In a Northwest Arkansas spring storm, those are the spots that overflow first.
Yes, 5 inch is the cost-effective option, and it handles average rainfall on a typical single-family roof. The savings only make sense if it keeps up with your roof, though. An overflowing gutter costs more in fascia and foundation damage than the difference in size. Your written estimate tells you honestly which size your roofline needs.
5 inch comes in both K-style and half-round, in aluminum as well as copper. K-style is the profile most commonly used on homes, and colored aluminum lets you match it to your trim. Half-round in 5 inch is a good choice when you want a traditional look on a home that does not need the extra capacity.
On the right roof, yes. A 5 inch gutter with enough downspouts handles average rainfall well, and the key is capacity at the outlets. We pair 5 inch with 2 by 3 or 3 by 4 inch downspouts depending on roof area, and where a run keeps overflowing, a larger or added downspout often fixes it without replacing the gutter.
Yes. BroGuard metal micro-mesh fits 5 inch gutters and keeps oak leaves, acorns and hickory hulls out while rain flows through. Guarding a 5 inch gutter matters, because a smaller trough loses capacity faster once debris starts to build.
