Matching the gutter metal to the house, the roof and the trees overhead
Four materials, four different jobs. Here is how we match them to the stone, brick, metal roofs and heavy canopy you find on Northwest Arkansas properties.
Most homes here are well served by colored aluminum. The specialty metals earn their price in particular situations: a stone or brick home where copper becomes part of the architecture, a metal-roofed house or shop where galvalume ties in with the roof panels, or a barn or farmhouse where galvanized steel’s strength and plain mill finish fit the building.
Weather plays into it too. Spring storms bring straight-line wind and hail, and big oak and hickory limbs come down with them. Steel gutters stand up to branch strikes and the weight of wet debris better than lighter metals. Winter freeze-thaw cycles test seams and hangers on every material, which is one more reason we form runs seamless on-site.
Budget lines up roughly the way you would expect. Copper sits at the top and lasts the longest. Galvalume costs less than copper while coming close to its lifespan with proper care. Galvanized steel is fairly inexpensive next to copper, and colored aluminum is the most budget-friendly of the four.
The four materials side by side
| Material | How it looks over time | Where it fits here | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colored aluminum | Baked-on color that holds its look | Most homes, especially when matching trim, siding or brick | Colored aluminum gutters |
| Copper | Bright metallic, darkening to brown and eventually a green patina | Stone, brick and high-end homes where the gutter is a feature | Copper gutters |
| Galvalume | Matte gun-metal gray that does not fade | Modern homes and anything with a metal roof | Galvalume gutters |
| Galvanized steel | Mill finish with no patina, paintable | Barns, farm homes and contemporary builds that want an industrial edge | Galvanized gutters |
Questions to settle before you pick a metal
- How long you plan to own the house, since copper and galvalume pay off over decades.
- Whether you want the gutter to blend in or stand out.
- If you will enjoy a color that changes, or want one that stays put.
- What the roof is made of, and whether the gutter should match it.
- How much limb and debris weight the gutters take from nearby trees.
- Whether K-style or half-round gutter styles suit the architecture.

Start with the look you want and how long you plan to stay. Copper is for lifespan and curb appeal. Galvanized gives strength and a mill finish with no patina. Galvalume brings longevity and value. Colored aluminum is the practical, cost-friendly choice for most homes. We weigh budget, function and looks with you at the estimate.
Yes. All specialty materials are available in K-style and half-round, though seamless half-round is only available at some locations, so confirm with your Solutionist. Half-round copper suits traditional and historic homes, while K-style in colored aluminum or galvalume fits most newer builds.
Copper. Properly maintained copper can last around 50 to 150 years, longer than any other gutter material, and it never needs paint. Galvalume is the next step, with a longevity that rivals copper at a lower price. Most other materials last around 10 to 30 years.
For looks, strength or lifespan. Copper and half-round profiles make the gutter part of the design on a historic or high-end home. Galvanized and galvalume add steel strength, useful under heavy hardwood debris and on metal-roofed homes. Colored aluminum lets you match trim, fascia or roof without stepping up in price.
Copper is the vintage choice, because its patina ages to an antique brown and eventually green. Galvanized mill finish reads rustic and suits barns and farm homes. Galvalume’s gun-metal finish looks contemporary, and colored aluminum covers the classic look in almost any shade. Rain chains and ornamental conductor heads finish the style.
Aluminum is the budget-friendly option, and copper sits at the top. Galvanized is fairly inexpensive next to copper, and galvalume is priced below copper while lasting nearly as long. If you love the copper look, Copper Penny and Dark Bronze colored aluminum give that appeal at a fraction of the cost. Your free written estimate can price more than one material.
