6 inch gutters in Northwest Arkansas
The roofs that need 6 inch gutters, and what an upgrade involves
An extra inch of width sounds small. On a steep roof, a valley corner or a porch catching a second story, it is the difference between water in the downspout and water down the siding.
The homes that call us about overflow in a spring storm tend to share a few features: a steep pitch, a long eave, a valley that funnels two slopes into one corner, or a second-story roof that empties onto a porch roof below. Every one of those concentrates water into a short stretch of gutter, faster than a 5 inch trough can move it.
Metal roofs belong on that list too. Water leaves a metal panel faster than it leaves shingles, so a gutter under a metal roof gets the whole storm at once. If you have one on the house or the shop, we size for it.
Six inch gutters pair with 3×4 downspouts, which carry noticeably more than the 2×3 size common on smaller systems. The wider gutter and the bigger outlet work together. Upgrading one without the other only moves the bottleneck.
Where 6 inch earns its keep
- Runs over 40 feet where a second downspout will not fit on the wall.
- Runs longer than 60 feet.
- Lower gutters that take water from an upper roof or its downspout.
- Large roof areas that drain into a short gutter run.
- Inside valleys that overflow the corner in heavy rain.
- Metal roofs, which shed water faster than shingles.
- Steep pitches on hillside homes, where water hits the gutter with speed.
Overflow symptoms and what 6 inch changes
| What you see in a storm | Likely cause | What changes with 6 inch |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet of water over one corner | Valley or upper roof concentrating flow | More trough volume at the corner, plus a 3×4 outlet nearby |
| Water jumping the front edge on a steep slope | Runoff moving faster than a 5 inch catches | A wider opening that catches the arc of water |
| Overflow mid-run on a clean gutter | Too much roof area for one run | Higher capacity across the whole length |
| Downspout roaring, gutter still spilling | 2×3 outlet maxed out | A 3×4 downspout carrying the extra flow |
What a 5 to 6 inch upgrade looks like
- Run-by-run assessment.Your Solutionist marks which runs need 6 inch and which can stay 5 inch, so you only pay for capacity where it matters.
- Old system off, fascia checked.A full 6 inch gutter carries more weight, so soft or rotted boards get replaced before anything is hung.
- Formed on-site.New runs are rolled in your driveway to the exact length of each eave.
- Hung and pitched.Screwed hidden hangers and a steady slope toward every outlet.
- 3×4 downspouts installed.Outlets are cut and downspouts placed where the water has a clear path away.
- Flow tested. We run water through each run and watch it leave at the bottom of every downspout.
More capacity at the roofline means more water at ground level, which matters on sloped, wooded lots. Our post on where the water goes on steep Northwest Arkansas lots covers it, and underground gutter drainage can carry it well clear of the foundation. If rot shows up during the upgrade, we handle fascia board replacement in the same visit. For buildings beyond what 6 inch can carry, see 7 inch gutters.

Consider 6 inch if you have a run over 40 feet with only one downspout, runs longer than 60 feet, a lower gutter catching water from an upper one, inside valleys that overflow, or a metal roof. Large roofs that concentrate runoff into a short gutter run also need it. Roof pitch changes how fast water arrives, so we size to your roof.
Usually because a hard spring storm showed them what their 5 inch gutters could not handle. Heavy rain overflowing a smaller gutter is the most common reason people move up, and 6 inch seamless installs have risen significantly in recent years. Roof pitch plays a big part too, since steeper roofs send water into the gutter faster, so every system should be sized to the roof it sits on.
On most two-story and larger homes, 6 inch looks proportional, and the K-style front reads like trim. On a smaller single-story home the extra inch is more noticeable, which is one reason we sometimes mix sizes. A Solutionist can show you both during the estimate so you can judge them against your roofline.
Yes. Metal roofs are on the list of roofs that call for 6 inch, because water sheds off metal quickly and can overwhelm a smaller trough. The larger gutter gives it somewhere to go. If your metal roof also sees occasional snow, ask about snow guards so a sliding sheet does not tear the run off the fascia.
If your roof overflows a 5 inch gutter, yes. The larger coil and downspouts cost somewhat more per foot, but overflow that runs down the fascia and pools at the foundation costs far more to fix. If only part of the house needs the capacity, we can put 6 inch there and keep 5 inch everywhere else.
They give you more margin than 5 inch, since the wider trough and 3 by 4 inch downspouts leave more room before leaves and acorns cause a backup. They will still fill under a hardwood canopy, though. Pairing 6 inch gutters with BroGuard metal mesh keeps the extra capacity available for water instead of debris.
